Competence Network for Aerospace Technology
The Austrian Aeronautics Research network is a collaborative research program for composite and light weight materials and components. The network is coordinated by AIT. The major Austrian research groups and companies in the aerospace sector cooperate in the development of materials, process technologies, components and engineering methods.
AFocuses in research are „Structural Health Monitoring“ for the application in fibre-laminate components and „Damage Tolerant Design“ for complex metallic components. The main industrial research tasks of the industrial partners FACC, Magna, Böhler, Pankl, Plansee, AMAG, Isovolta, FWT, AAe, Schiebel are resins and prepregs, fiber-composite structures, components for the application and storage of liquid hydrogen, hollow sphere-structures, Titanium-Aluminides, Titanium-matrix composites, Aluminium and Titanium alloys and components.
The research partners AIT, MU Leoben and TU Wien offer research service in materials and component development. MU and TU are active in the computational simulation and modelling of materials and the according components. Additionally the AAR test facilities – the high resolution scanning microscope with focussed ion beam column and additional analytics, mechanical and fatigue testing for the temperature range - 269 °C to 1800°C, acoustic emission, ultrasonic and impedance inspection – are available at ARC and MU respectively. The AAR has gained significant scientific importance in the areas of micro-characterization of materials, fatigue and fracture mechanics, failure mechanism and prediction of fatigue life of materials and components.
The network AAR is supported by the Austrian Ministry of Economics and the federal governments of Vienna, Styria, the Tyrol, Upper Austria and Lower Austria.
