Cryogenic Mechanical Testing

The cryogenic mechanical facility was developed in cooperation with the University of technology of Vienna, Prof. Tschegg. The apparatus is an insulted tank with various chambers for pre cooling sample with Liquid Nitrogen and for cooling with Liquid Helium. This tank is integrated in the Universal testing facility with the help of a lever for the mechanical load. The mechanical test can be done in tensile, bending or compression mode, as well as for inter-laminar shear, fatigue, fracture toughness, characterisation of joints ... The top loading in tensile test is 200 kN. The working fluid for cryogenic environment is liquid helium which corresponds to a temperature of -269 °C. The temperature variation along the specimen is less than 0.3 °C. No heating up of the cryostat is needed between two tests, because the samples can be changed with a special top loading mechanism. The cooling down time of a specimen is about 10 mn.
