Cold welding due to impact ("Impact test facility")

Diese Seite ist nur in Englisch verfügbar.

The facility enables the measurement of the adhesion force between two materials in cyclic closed contacts. That means, a contact between a pin and a disc is closed and opened for several (thousand) times. At closing an impact with defined impact energy is applied and afterwards the contact is held closed at defined static load for selectable durations. At each opening the adhesion force, i.e. the force necessary to separate both in vertical direction, is measured. High resolutions downto 1 mN can be achieved. The test provides the tendency to cold welding by a plot of the adhesion force as function of cycles.

Impact Test Facility:

Front window opened, loading by electromagnet thrugh bellows, force measurement directly above pin inside vacuum chamber, vibration free by air suspension and ion getter pumps, optional: glow discharge cleaning.

Measurement of

  • Adhesion force at each opening
  • Impact energy and force
  • Environmental Data (Vacuum)
  • Optional (e.g. residual gas, user defined: e.g. contact resistance)

Postexamination by

  • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and
  • energy dispersive X-ray analysis EDX , profilometry
